GeoInformatics

About GeoInformatics

Field of Research

Geoinformatics is the science and the technology which develops and uses information science infrastructure to address the problems of geography, cartography, geosciences and related branches of science and engineering.

Geodesy

About Geodesy

Field of Research

Geodesy — also known as geodetics or geodetics engineering — a branch of applied mathematics and earth sciences, is the scientific discipline that deals with the measurement and representation of the Earth, including its gravitational field, in a three-dimensional time-varying space.

Global Navigation Satellite Systems

About Global Navigation Satellite Systems

Field of Research

A satellite navigation or satnav system is a system of satellites that provide autonomous geo-spatial positioning with global coverage. It allows small electronic receivers to determine their location (longitude, latitude, and altitude/elevation) to high precision (within a few meters) using time signals transmitted along a line of sight by radio from satellites.

Spatial analysis

About Spatial analysis

Field of Research

Spatial analysis or spatial statistics includes any of the formal techniques which study entities using their topological, geometric, or geographic properties. Spatial analysis includes a variety of techniques, many still in their early development, using different analytic approaches and applied in fields as diverse as astronomy, with its studies of the placement of galaxies in the cosmos, to chip fabrication engineering, with its use of "place and route" algorithms to build complex wiring structures. In a more restricted sense, spatial analysis is the technique applied to structures at the human scale, most notably in the analysis of geographic data.

Remote sensing

About Remote sensing

Field of Research

Remote sensing is the acquisition of information about an object or phenomenon without making physical contact with the object and thus in contrast to on site observation. Remote sensing is a sub-field of geography.

Photogrammetry

About Photogrammetry

Field of Research

Photogrammetry is the science of making measurements from photographs, especially for recovering the exact positions of surface points. Moreover, it may be used to recover the motion pathways of designated reference points located on any moving object, on its components and in the immediately adjacent environment.

GIS - geographical information science

About

GIS

Software

A geographic information system or geographical information system (GIS) or geospatial information system is a system designed to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, manage, and present all types of spatial or geographical data.

Web mapping

About Web mapping

Field of Research

Web mapping is the process of using maps delivered by geographical information systems (GIS). Since a webmap on the World Wide Web is both served and consumed, web mapping is more than just web cartography, it is both a service activity and consumer activity.

Tectonic subsidence

About

Tectonic subsidence

Field of Research

Tectonic subsidence is the sinking of the Earth's crust on a large scale, relative to crustal-scale features or the geoid. The movement of crustal plates and accommodation spaces created by faulting create subsidence on a large scale in a variety of environments, including passive margins, aulacogens, fore-arc basins, foreland basins, intercontinental basins and pull-apart basins. Three mechanisms are common in the tectonic environments in which subsidence occurs: extension, cooling and loading.

Plate tectonics

About

Plate tectonics

Fields of Research

Plate tectonics (from the Late Latin tectonicus, from the Greek: τεκτονικός "pertaining to building") is a scientific theory that describes the large-scale motion of Earth's lithosphere. This theoretical model builds on the concept of continental drift which was developed during the first few decades of the 20th century.

Cartography

About

Cartography

Field of Research

Cartography (from Greek χάρτης khartēs, "map"; and γράφειν graphein, "write") is the study and practice of making maps. Combining science, aesthetics, and technique, cartography builds on the premise that reality can be modeled in ways that communicate spatial information effectively.

Who We Are
The LSU Center for GeoInformatics is the home of the Louisiana Spatial Reference Center; creator and host of Louisiana's NOAA CORS Network. LSU created C4G to focus on research and services in Geodesy and GeoInformatics; as a result C4G has established Louisiana's only Statewide GPS/GNSS Real-Time Network, C4GNet.XYZ which is entirely funded by our subscribers.
