In Memoriam: J. Anthony “Tony” Cavell, PLS, CFedS
Honoring the Legacy of a C4G Cornerstone and Geodetic Visionary

J. Anthony “Tony” Cavell, PLS, CFedS
"GPSMAN"
April 27, 1951 - July 4, 2026
Dedicated Leader, Visionary Geodesist, and Cherished Cornerstone of LSU C4G.
The LSU Center for GeoInformatics (C4G) and the Louisiana Spatial Reference Center (LSRC) mourn the passing of J. Anthony “Tony” Cavell, our esteemed Louisiana State Geodetic Coordinator and former Associate Director. Tony was not just a colleague; he was a foundational pillar of our organization, a visionary leader, and a definitive voice in high-precision positioning and geospatial infrastructure.
Through his decades of service, Tony permanently elevated C4G’s mission, positioning Louisiana as a national leader in modern geodesy. His work delivers tangible benefits to global science, regional industry, emergency management, and the public every single day.
A Message from the Director
"Tony Cavell was the technical heartbeat and the professional conscience of our center. His brilliant grasp of geodetic science was matched only by his absolute dedication to protecting and mapping the state of Louisiana. Tony didn't just maintain networks; he built relationships, mentored generations of professionals, and set the standard for what excellence looks like in our field. His loss leaves an irreplaceable void at LSU and in particular in the Center for GeoInformatics (C4G), but his legacy is permanently written into the literal framework of our state."
— Dr. George Z. Voyiadjis, Boyd Professor and Director of C4G
A Lifetime of Technical Mastery and Leadership
Tony’s career was defined by a rare depth of expertise and an unwavering commitment to professional excellence.
- Surveying Pioneer: A licensed Professional Land Surveyor in Louisiana since 1990 and one of the nation’s original Certified Federal Surveyors (CFedS).
- Building GULFNet: Joining C4G in 2005, Tony was instrumental in building and maintaining GULFNet and C4Gnet.XYZ.
- Height Modernization: As a researcher and co-investigator, Tony was part of the team that secured $5,767,677 across three multi-year NOAA/NGS Height Mod Grants over 24 years to support the LSRC. This funding advanced the National Height Modernization Program's mission to provide accurate, reliable elevation data. The resulting information drives smarter decision-making across vital areas throughout Louisiana and the entire Gulf Coast, including flood risk determination, mapping, transportation, and ecosystem management.
- Global Impact: Under his technical guidance, this network grew into one of the largest university-operated GNSS Continuously Operating Reference Station (CORS) networks in the world.
- The State Reference: Tony’s work established the official positioning reference system that modern Louisiana relies upon for infrastructure, research, and boundary control.
Protecting Louisiana Through Innovation
Tony possessed an extraordinary ability to translate complex geodetic theories into practical, lifesaving solutions for our state's unique environment.
- Post-Katrina Recovery: In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, he spearheaded critical efforts to establish accurate elevations and benchmarks across a fractured landscape.
- Geological Resilience: He aligned Louisiana's spatial framework with the National Spatial Reference System (NSRS), directly confronting the challenges of regional subsidence and coastal erosion.
- A Safer State: His engineering of resilient networks ensured that first responders, planners, and builders always have access to trustworthy spatial data when it matters most.
A National Voice with Local Impact
Tony’s influence extended far beyond the boundaries of campus, bringing immense prestige to LSU.
- Distinguished Fellow: He served with distinction as a Fellow of the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping (ACSM), the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS), and the American Association for Geodetic Surveying (AAGS).
- National Leadership: As President of both the NSPS and AAGS, he amplified C4G’s national influence while bringing global best practices home to Louisiana.
- The "TONY" Monument: In recognition of his foundational impact, the permanent CORS monument in Lafayette was named "TONY"—a lasting, physical testament to his work integrated directly into our network.
Anchoring Our Future
Tony’s role as a vanguard stemmed from his profound passion for outreach and education. He was fiercely dedicated to ensuring that C4G remained at the cutting edge of rapid technological change, from multi-constellation GNSS to modern real-time networks.
Through his quiet dedication, strategic vision, and elite professional integrity, Tony Cavell did more than just perform his job—he defined what excellence means at C4G. We are profoundly fortunate to have been the home of his life’s work. His legacy is permanently mapped across the state he loved, and he will be deeply missed by his LSU family and the global surveying community.
